New Resonance

Jan 23, 2010,07:51 AM

Here are a few quick photos of the new Resonance, with the 24 hour indicator on the left. It's available in platinum and rose gold. Note that FPJ drew this 8 years ago, but kept it in his drawer until the 10th anniversary of the Resonance; he feels it's a good time to update it. The reason for the dials being asymmetrical now is that the discs for the 24 hour display are limited by the location of the seconds hand (otherwise they wouldn't fit).

Face Lift

 By: bs22fly : January 23rd, 2010-08:25
Too early for me to give a firm opinion as too many thoughts racing through my mind. One thing for sure is that I never question Journe's design aesthetics. I initially questioned the Centigraphe only to fall in love with it later on. This one may take so...

You have to be kidding me

This is a practical joke.

Very interesting...

I wonder, which dial should have home time, and which dial should have travel time?

The right should be the local time.

 By: bs22fly : January 23rd, 2010-08:29
I'd think you would want to keep the right subdial on local time since one of the the subtle joys of the watch is the ability to view the subdial without pulling your cuff back entirely.

Thanks for Posting, Sean

I think I need to see this before I rush to anything other than a single sentiment: This is not the Resonance. It may have a parallel look, dual mechanisms, etc. but this piece is certainly a very different watch and will not compete for collectors who fo...

It's still a Resonance IMO

 By: Sean : January 23rd, 2010-12:50
While the look may be different, the principle behind how the watch works is still the same, so IMO it's "still" a Resonance. I think the new face is quite inventive, and is probably meant to spark some discussion as well.

I'm beginning to share the same view - It's just about the name!

 By: bs22fly : January 23rd, 2010-16:08
When the old remontoir was renamed the Dead Seconds the view of the remontoir shifted to the back and the dial design when from asymmetrical to symmetrical. The new Resonance has the same movement (which still relies on the principals of resonance) yet th...

wow, thanks

 By: donizetti : January 23rd, 2010-10:07
not what I expected at all. I thought he would have added a subtle day/night indicator to both dials, keeping the idea and appeal of the original, but clearly he has "broken the symmetry" and created a completely different thing. To me this cannot replace...

Not the same

 By: Antoine1969 : January 23rd, 2010-13:22
it's good that he kept the design in his drawer for 8 years, that was enough for some of us to purchase the old resonance. i am not saying that this watch is... it's just that i feel lucky to own the old one.

I must agree with Douglas. This is no longer a true Resonance

 By: marcelphilippe : January 23rd, 2010-14:04
The charismatic balance of the identical dials is gone. Pity. I can only surmise that the original Resonance will grow in value. I can't imagine buying this watch as a resonant GMT, there is no such market. As they say, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Forever Classic

 By: bs22fly : January 23rd, 2010-16:14
I don't think this is a case of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it"... more like "all good things come to end". The Resonance is forever part of Journe's DNA and you are now seeing is it take on a new life. We all knew the the original resonance was a clas...

This is absolutely a beautiful watch, Thanks for sharing!

Yes, we all love the emperors new clothes!

 By: asg : January 23rd, 2010-20:58
Does it come with a magnifying glass or decoder key? (Toung in cheek - just being silly) I think the dial numbers are smaller than the outer ring on the "right" side dial. - Any other real live observations, please weigh in. Thank you Sean for the photos....

LONG LIVE THE KING, THE KING IS DEAD! ...

Its hard to replace an Icon

 By: tourbillon001 : January 24th, 2010-10:40
just look what happened to Ducati when they had to replace the 916/996/998. The 999 was never a success and they went back to a bike that was much closer to the 916 again. I don't know how well this new watch will be received but I know the old resonance ...

Great catch Sean!

Mixed emotions...

Thanks for posting the photos Sean! I have mixed emotions to this one! Firstly I do agree it's about time the Resonance gets revised... On the other hand, I'm not so sure about breaking the symmetry of it. It is nevertheless a very beautiful watch. But th...

ASG & Sidney imo you make some very valid points. My first thoughts when I saw Sean's photos was "What the heck, that is some change" and a very similar thought to when I first saw a photo of the Lange & Sohne, Zeitwerk I will have to allow time t...

Not as useful for timing operations

 By: amerix : January 25th, 2010-07:21
With the original you could set the hands of one of these tiny clocks to 12 and then read off the elapsed time, in hours and minutes - even seconds if required. Even more fun is to use it as a count-down to 12. For many purposes it makes a chronograph red...

Sensible design

 By: Jester : January 25th, 2010-08:48
I think the dial layout makes perfect sense and truely serves the purpose of the dual time zone watch. Having said that, I still love the original layout although I appreciate it more from a design's perspective. i.e. I never used my resonance as a two ti...

of my fav Journe.A true classic. This variation gives a very interesting appeal to the resonance.I like it a lot.Mo

Another wonderful creation.

I think I would go for the first edition but this new version is not bad at all. I like the 24h disc indicator in terms of functionality but esthetically prefer the 1st one. Anyway, love it!! Thanks for sharing. Vte

 By: bigdave : January 26th, 2010-02:19
The original Resonance is a paradigm of form following function: the theory of the movement mirrored in the balance of the watch's face, almost as if the watch DEMANDED its face. Pretty perfect, in my book. This new piece is a lovely wristwatch, and if th...
